Chandler’s Grammar Cheatsheet
1. Adjective instead of adverb
✅ “Hold it careful, mister.” (Farewell, My Lovely)
❌ Formal English: “Hold it carefully.”
👉 Common in spoken English — gives dialogue a streetwise, unpolished sound.
2. Sentence fragments
✅ “It was a blonde. A blonde to make a bishop kick a hole in a stained-glass window.”
❌ Formal: would need a full clause.
👉 Creates rhythm, staccato punch, like a detective’s internal voice.
3. Dropped words / ellipsis
✅ “You talk too damn much.” (The Big Sleep)
Could have been: “You are talking too much.”
👉 Cuts to the bone, keeps the voice terse.
4. Colloquial idioms / slang
✅ “She gave me a smile I could feel in my hip pocket.”
Uses slangy metaphors that sound local rather than literary.
5. Mixed or “illogical” metaphors
✅ “Dead men are heavier than broken hearts.”
The logic doesn’t matter — the punchline does.
6. Double negatives & “wrong” forms
✅ “You ain’t got nothing on me.” (typical Chandler voice in minor characters)
❌ Formal: “You don’t have anything on me.”
👉 Marks social class, toughness, or defiance.
7. Overloaded similes (borderline absurd)
✅ “It was hotter than a two-dollar pistol.”
✅ “He looked about as inconspicuous as a tarantula on a slice of angel food cake.”
👉 The exaggeration is the joke — it sticks in your head.
8. Personification of objects
✅ “The streets were dark with something more than night.”
✅ “The city was asleep. The city was having nightmares.”
👉 Gives the noir world itself a threatening, alive quality.
📝 Rule of Thumb
If Chandler’s grammar looks “wrong,” ask:
Does it sound like someone would actually say it?
Does it hit like a punch or linger like smoke?
If yes → then it’s Chandler being Chandler.
Ahojte.
Nezachytis kulturni nuance, slang, dobu...
Mala ukazka:
"Man, that's liquor," she sighed. "I don't give a damn who you are. Just hold it careful, mister. This ain't no time to drop anything."
She got up and waddled out of the room and come back with two thick smeared glasses.
"No fixin's. Just what you brought is all," she said.
I poured her a slug that would have made me float over a wall. She reached for it hungrily and put it down her throat like an aspirin tablet and looked at the bottle. I poured her another and a smaller one for me. She took it over to her rocker. Her eyes had turned two shades browner already.
"Man, this stuff dies painless with me," she said and sat down. "It never knows what hit it. What was we talkin' about?"
